Everyday that I work at Six Apart, I discover a new way in which blogs are impacting the world. In this case, a few bloggers that have created the ability to attract Maria Shriver to come make a personal appearance at Books Inc. in Palo Alto, CA. For everyone who attended, it was a great opportunity to listen and learn from a celebrity/author/mother/First Lady. Through presenting to a roomful of the top "mommy bloggers" in the Silicon Valley, Maria could extend her message to thousands, while maintaining the authenticity and intimacy that gets diluted in any mainstream media outlet.
Big call out to Jill Asher, Pamela Hornik, Beth Blecherman and Tekla Nee - the women who founded and run the Silicon Valley Mom's Blog Network which includes a long list of regional blogs including Chicago Moms, NY Moms, DC Metro Moms and NJ Moms. In recruiting Maria Shriver to come and do an intimate private book signing with Q&A w/60 "mommy bloggers" in the Silicon Valley, they found a way to rise above the thousands of requests that she gets for personal appearances. I was lucky enough to be invited (...and the only guy in the audience.)
My favorite part was Maria's conviction as she said, "the question is what are you going to do with this wild and precious life of yours..." and how she tries to instill this perspective in her kids every day.
